Amy Louise Small

Amy Louise Small is a character designed and created by Anne Stearn Lynch who
also originated Mrs. Alphabet and the Alphabet Kids. After teaching 8 years of
preschool and 27 years of kindergarten Anne ventured to the first grade with her
kindergarten class. She felt committed to establish a new character to symbolize
the metamorphosis and emergence of children from kindergarteners to first
graders. Please read my resume.
Anne describes the transformation of children like the life cycle of a
butterfly. This reflects in the design of her logo. First the egg stage represents nursery school or day care as this is
the first time children are relinquished to the care of others. Second the
caterpillar or "kidapillar" stage symbolizes kindergarten where the children
devour knowledge, facts, opinions, and beginning skills. They shed the layers of
important and core procedures as they satiate their appetite for understanding
and comprehending the universe. Third the start of first grade the pupa or
pupils stage illustrates the formation of the chrysalis as they restructure and
reorganize the abundance of knowledge they have acquired. Time spent in the
chrysalis cements learning as they transform, building a stronger and more
concrete framework and foundation for skills needed to be successful pupas or
pupils. Fourth at the conclusion of the first grade many pupas emerge and are
free like butterflies and take flight to experience, master, and model what they
learned in the chrysalis which completes the cycle. Some children proceed early
from the chrysalis while some need more time.

Amy Louise Small is set in a butterfly bower. This is a private place where she can feel free amongst the butterflies to imagine and absorb the fresh air to renew her spirit and ideas. She talks to the butterflies like they are her students. They embrace her and remind her that children need to explore and experience in a stimulating, picturesque, and nurturing environment. She reflects her personal and professional goals as she savors her cherished moments in the bower. The key around her neck symbolizes the minds she unlocks and the doorways she opens for her students to discover and learn. The watch on her hand portrays that time is of the essence. Amy Louise Small visits the butterfly bower frequently to meditate and contemplate her accomplishments and challenges.
